Co-ops, Support Groups and Activities

Cooperatives and Community Groups can best be described as weekly opportunities to meet with other homeschooling families in order to share the effort of educating their children.

Co-operatives typically share the burden of teaching among the parents, with each parent taking on some teaching or support load. Enrichment Classes may be taught by paid instructors or parents.

Community Groups typically offer tutoring or other services from trained tutors. These groups may meet 8-9 months of the year, similar to a typical school year, or may go year-round.

Joining these groups is completely optional; many families “go it alone” without joining together with others.

Cooperatives and communities should not be confused with Umbrella Schools, which are one of the methods homeschooling families can use to meet state requirements for homeschooling.

Co-ops are sorted alphabetically after the following list, along with Support groups and Activities.

Support Groups meet to encourage you on your homeschool journey.  These are often held as part of a co-op or after school hours for parents to discuss issues or learn schooling and parenting techniques. Nowadays, you can even meet online for encouragement with local people on facebook.  SMHEA has a facebook page: SMHEA.org on Facebook!

Quest Academy

Details: Located at 12210 Martel Road, The Christian Church of Loudon County in Lenior City, TN. Quest Academy endeavors to operate according to Christian principles, but not any specific church or denomination. We are not a religious organization. We have no "statement of faith" or other doctrinal agreements that we require members to sign. Our vision at Quest Academy is to provide the home educating family a resource that goes beyond a "drop-off place" for enrichment classes. At Quest Academy, parents find a niche that matches their strengths where they can serve. Our students are divided into small groups that rotate from class to class. Each day includes six class periods. The high school students have classes year round. What classes we offer vary from year to year, but we try to always include reading/language arts, science, social studies, P.E., art/music, and another elective. We also offer field trips and fun days at co-op throughout the year. We have twin day, crazy hair day, field day, and many more. We are always on the lookout for new and exciting places to visit and explore but some yearly favorites are Disney on Ice, The Ringling Brothers Circus, plays, Senior Trip to Daytona Beach, and the TN Valley Fair.
